Rocker-bottom foot
Foot is like a rocker bottom chair
It occurs in two conditions:
As a congenital anaomoly. Rocker bottom foot also known as "congenital vertical talus" is an anomaly of the foot.It is characterized by a prominent calcaneus and a convex rounded bottom to the foot.
It can be associated with Patau's syndrome (trisomy 13) and Edwards' syndrome (trisomy 18) as well as Trisomy 9 and mutation in the gene HOXD10.
Here foot is intact without ulcerations, amputations etc.
As an acquired defect it is seen most commonly in advanced Diabetes Mellitus where arches of foot become flat because of neuropathy and loss of tone + fractures + amputations + charcot's, deformed and swollen joints. The above foot is the classical example of this and we often see it our diabetic patients if we are watchful.
